Panama 2022: The second largest recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Central America

Panama was one of the countries of Central America (along with Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica) that have attracted important Foreign Direct Investment in Central America during 2022.

According to a report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) for 2022, Foreign Direct Investment in the region was 9,813 million dollars (mdd). However, less investment was received in Central America, but the behavior in the countries was heterogeneous. Despite this context, there was foreign investment in Central America through different projects in countries like Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica.

In what concerns Panama, the project of major magnitude in renewable energies was announced by the American SGP BioEnergy in Panama, which refers to investments of 2,473 million in the Biorefinería Ciudad Dorada. This project, which is carried out in partnership with Panama Oil Terminals and the Government of Panama, will have the capacity to produce 180,000 barrels per day, making it the world's largest aviation biofuel production platform (Ministry of Commerce and Industry, 2022).

According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), Panamá received a Foreign Direct Investment of 2,513 million dollars (mdd) during 2022, being the second largest recipient in Central America. In 2021 Panama had totaled 1,761 million, a figure that signified an increase of 42.7% after the strong drop in 2020 of 2,477 million.
